Benjamin Field worked as a churchwarden. After being arrested in January 2018, in August 2019 he was convicted of the murder of author Peter Farquhar, and in October 2019 sentenced to a minimum of 36 years in prison. He lost an appeal against conviction on two occasions.

In 2023, Benjamin Field’s crime was adapted into a BBC TV show called The Sixth Commandment.
